The island may not be Japan’s most popular travel destination, but it’s certainly growing. Here are a few things you may not have known about this sub-tropical island.
The world Ishigaki in Japanese means ‘Stone Wall’.
It’s thought that name comes from the walls that line many of the streets on the island.
The oldest wooden building in Okinawa can be found on Ishigaki. It’s called Torinji Temple and was built in 1614.
A bridge connects the Ishigaki to a manmade island affectionately known as Cat Island. As the name suggests, there are many felines living here.
Approximately 50,000 people call the island home.
