Take an OTT tour of the most active volcano on the planet

We’re going to be clear right from the outset: this extraordinary Hawaiian adventure comes with a price tag of US$39,500 (around AU$50,350).

But wait, it’s not quite as bad as it sounds, as the price is for up to four people. So if you're travelling with three others you'll need to budget around AU$12,500. It's still more than most people spend on an entire holiday – and this experience only lasts for 27 hours!

But what an experience it is. If you have cash to splash, or were looking for a completely OTT way to celebrate a special occasion, this might be it.

The mind-blowing ‘Ultimate Pop-up Volcano Adventure’ is the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai’s first-ever pop-up overnight experience and centres around the hyperactive Kilauea Volcano on the island of Hawaii (a.k.a ‘The Big Island’). It’s the most active volcano on the planet, and has been erupting on a continuous basis since 1983.

The trip starts with a helicopter flight above the Kohala Mountains, taking in some of the most breathtaking sights on the island. Waterfalls, hidden valleys and black-sand beaches are just some of the things you'll see before landing in an exclusive-access area for lunch beside one of the waterfalls.

Afterwards, a guided hike will take you to the remarkable Kamokuna – the spot where more than a million gallons of lava flow into the ocean every hour. Then it's back on the chopper for a flight over Kilauea Volcano itself, accompanied by one of the world’s leading volcanologists who will provide expert insight and knowledge from anywhere between 305 and 1,524 metres above ground level.

Later, after landing near the volcano, you’ll be taken to a Rainforest Cottage Hideaway – a 167-square-metre, two-level retreat in the midst of a 1,000-year-old rainforest. (And by 'cottage,' we mean it comes with a flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi, fireplace and an outdoor sauna house, whirlpool and showers.)

Cocktails, a Hawaiian cultural performance and an intimate dinner prepared by a Four Seasons chef – followed by that uniquely American sweet treat, s’mores – might seem to mark the end of the night, but one last adventure awaits: a night hike to the Kilauea Caldera to witness the volcano put on its spectacular show against the backdrop of night.

The next morning, after the chef prepares breakfast, you'll take another helicopter tour to explore the Kau Coast. Along the way you'll see the southernmost point of the United States, the volcano rift zone and maybe even humpback whales (if you're very lucky and time it just right), en route to a secluded beach for a light lunch, mimosas and a spot of snorkelling. Then it's back to the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, reality and the best Instagram and Facebook entries you'll probably ever make.

This unforgettable private charter was unveiled last year as a 2017-only experience, but has been so popular they’ve decided to extend it through 2018.

Has anybody got a spare 50k they can lend us?!
