A lawyer and an old man sat next to each other on a long flight. The lawyer asked the older man if he wanted to play a game but the man was tired and told the lawyer he wanted to sleep.
The lawyer insisted on playing. "Here's how it works." The lawyer started, "I'll ask you a question and if you can't come up with an answer you have to give me a dollar. Then it's your turn to ask me one. If I can't answer I give you $20."
The old man sighed and decided to play so that the lawyer would let him sleep later.
The first question from the lawyer was, "How far away is the moon from the earth?"
The old man remained completely silent before reaching for a dollar and handing it over to the lawyer. Then he said, "My turn. What walks upstairs backwards and comes downstairs forward?"
The lawyer was stumped. He thought and thought. He tried to remember all the riddles he knew but he couldn't think of the answer. Finally after an hour he woke the man and gave him the $20 note. The old man took the money and tried to go back to sleep.
The lawyer nudged him again and said, "I can't stand it! What walks upstairs backwards and comes downstairs forward?"
The old man reached into his wallet, gave the lawyer a dollar and went back to sleep.
