7 nights on the luxury Azamara Pursuit, departing Venice 21 September, 2019.
Where better to begin than in romantic and beautiful Venice? Spend a day strolling scenic cobblestone streets, overarching bridges, and world-famous canals before we cross the Adriatic to Rijeka, a fascinating city perched on Kvarner Bay in Croatia. Climb over 500 steps on the 16th century Petar Kruzic Stairway to the Church of Our Lady, or savor fresh seafood from the many shops and cafés along the harbor on Korzo Street. In Zadar, be sure to sample the local cherry liqueur, Maraschino, which has been made here since the 16th century.
After cruising the scenic Croatian Inside Passage, a route larger ships can’t fit, enjoy an overnight in Split, where must-see landmarks include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Diocletian’s Palace, which dates back to the 4th century. You’ll also find many 12th century churches, medieval fortifications, and 15th century Gothic palaces.
We then stay late in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where you can discover charming squares and structures dating to the 7th century. A late stay on the island of Hvar, Croatia—fondly known as “the sunniest place in Europe”—is our last stop before returning to Venice. Sip a crisp white posip and relax at one of many excellent restaurants with perfect views of the Adriatic Sea.
Day 1: Venice
Experience Venice, one of the most captivating—and romantic—cities in the world. Tour the city’s cobblestone streets and overarching bridges, or take to the water and explore the canals on a water taxi or gondola. As you make your way through the city, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to shop, sample delicious Veneto wines, or people watch in Piazza San Marco.
Day 2: Rijeka
Rijeka is fascinating to explore. The Governor’s Palace offers grand views over the harbor and of the grand Hapsburg interiors inside. Next climb the 16th century Petar Kruzic Stairway to the top of Trsat hill to visit the Church of Our Lady. Finally, ferry to the islands around the bay: cycle around Kirk, then stop at Baska beach - beautiful sand, clear water and “ice cream stands galore.”
Day 3: Zadar - Croatia Inside Passage
Old meets new in beautiful Zadar. Walk quaint cobblestone streets from a bygone era that give way to modern marvels of architecture and technology. Escape the city and explore two national parks—Krka and Plitvice—both teeming with natural beauty. Afterwards, sample Maraschino, a traditional liqueur made from marasca cherries and produced in Zadar distilleries since the 16th century.
Days 3-4: Split
Venture to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Diocletian’s Palace, which dates back to the 4th century. Let intuition be your guide as you spend the day meandering through the cobblestone streets. Wander down to the water’s edge and stroll along the Riva, the spectacular white marble-esque promenade. And if you do lose your bearings, one of the locals will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
Day 5: Dubrovnik
From the moment you step beyond the stonewalls that protects Dubrovnik, you’ll understand what makes it so special. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is adorned with charming squares and centuries-old red-roofed buildings. Walk the walls for a spectacular view of the city, and if anything looks familiar, it’s probably because Dubrovnik is the home of King’s Landing on HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Day 6: Hvar
Known as the “Sunniest Place in Europe”, Hvar receives an average of 7.7 hours of sunshine per day. So sunbathing is a favorite pastime here, especially at the beaches of Dubovica and the Pakleni Islands. There are plenty more jaw-dropping sights to see here: lush olive groves, fruit orchards, fields of lavender, and dozens of vineyards, since Hvar is one of the top winemaking regions in Croatia.
Days 7-8: Venice
Experience Venice, one of the most captivating—and romantic—cities in the world. Tour the city’s cobblestone streets and overarching bridges, or take to the water and explore the canals on a water taxi or gondola. As you make your way through the city, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to shop, sample delicious Veneto wines, or people watch in Piazza San Marco.
